How Much Should You Really Spend on Your First Guitar? A Beginner’s Budget Guide

Buying your first guitar is exciting — and a little confusing. Prices online range from under ₱2,000 to well over ₱20,000, and it’s not always clear what you’re actually paying for. Here’s a straightforward answer.

You don’t need to spend a lot to start well.

The biggest mistake new players make isn’t spending too little — it’s spending on the wrong things. A guitar that looks impressive but won’t hold its tuning will frustrate you far more than a simple, well-made beginner model that just works.

What actually matters for a first instrument:

  • It holds its tuning. If you’re re-tuning every five minutes, you’ll practice less — not because you’re not committed, but because it’s genuinely discouraging.
  • It’s comfortable to hold. Neck width and body size matter more than finish or brand for how much you’ll actually want to pick it up.
  • It comes with what you need to start. A gig bag, a pick, a spare string — small things that add up if you have to buy them separately.

What doesn’t matter yet:

Tonewood differences, premium electronics, professional-grade hardware — these matter once you know what you like, not on day one. Save that budget for later, if music sticks (and it usually does once the first few chords click).

A reasonable starting budget covers a solid, tuning-stable instrument with the basic accessories included — enough to get you through your first weeks of practice without second-guessing your purchase.
